Stilo Lighthouse

Stilo Lighthouse was built between 1904 and 1906 at the request of the German Navigation Association, based on a design by architect Walter Körte. The main reason for constructing the lighthouse was the high number of shipwrecks and groundings that occurred in the area at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Such incidents continued even later – for instance, in 1970, a Danish-flagged vessel ran aground during a storm measuring 12 on the Beaufort scale due to engine failure. The lighthouse crew assisted in the rescue operation via radio communication.

History of Stilo Lighthouse

For the early 20th century, Stilo Lighthouse was a highly modern construction, made from steel plates bolted together. The tower has a distinctive design – a truncated cone set on a sixteen-sided base. It is also easily recognizable thanks to its unique paintwork: three horizontal stripes – black at the bottom, white in the middle, and red at the top.

Today, Stilo is one of only two fully metal lighthouses in Poland (the other is in Jastarnia). The tower stands 33.4 meters tall, with a light elevation of 75 meters above sea level and a range of 23 nautical miles. At the top of the lighthouse are two observation galleries and a lantern. A former lighthouse keeper’s house is located nearby.

Interestingly, the tower is not situated right on the coast, but atop a 41-meter-high dune approximately 1,000 meters inland from the sea – unlike most lighthouses, which are typically built directly at the shoreline.

Visiting Stilo Lighthouse

Stilo Lighthouse is administered by the Maritime Office in Gdynia and is open to visitors from May through September.
